Whatsapp, WHAT'S THAT?!

Oh, so many ways for it to go wrong. And for us, it did—quickly.

When dealing with a passionate group of parents, we quickly learned it’s best to stick to a Sign-Up Genius or even a good ol' fashioned pen-and-paper sign-up to avoid conflict and over-the-top personalities!

WhatsApp groups can be a beautiful tool for room parents to share information and communicate with others. However, they can also become a dangerous forum when some parents are unsure about the proper etiquette of this modern-day communication.

It all started innocently enough: a simple message about an upcoming bake sale. But before we knew it, the group exploded with debates over cookie recipes, vegan options, and whether or not gluten was the root of all evil.

What began as a single message about who was bringing the napkins turned into a lengthy back-and-forth about napkin color choices and whether paper or cloth would better reflect our school’s values. By the end of the day, I had received 47 messages—none of which were very helpful!

In the midst of the chaos, we had a parent who seemed to take every comment personally. When someone suggested a “no nut” policy, they responded a list of alternatives and tips and tricks for recipes.

After what felt like a week of non-stop notifications, we decided to hold a group meeting to address the situation. “Let’s get back to basics,” I said, trying to steer us back on course. Someone else suggested, “Maybe we should stick to a calendar and a shared document for sign-ups?”

We agreed to reserve WhatsApp for urgent matters only—like when someone accidentally brought cookies with nuts to the bake sale. In the end, we learned that sometimes, less is more, especially when it comes to passionate parents and modern communication!
