How Much Candy for Trunk or Treat: Free Calculator
Free trunk or treat candy estimator printable with headcount, pieces per kid, bags needed and budget fields, decorated with cute pumpkins.

Every PTA asks the same question in October: how much candy do we actually need? Buy too little and the last ten trunks hand out pocket lint. Buy too much and the teachers' lounge eats leftovers until Thanksgiving.

The kids count candy. The PTA counts receipts. Nobody counts the candy we ate.

Here's the simple math we use, plus a free trunk or treat candy calculator printable that does it for you.

Step 1: Pick Your Pieces per Kid

  • Light: about 10 pieces per kid (short event, lots of games)

  • Typical: 15–20 pieces per kid

  • Generous: 25+ pieces per kid (the trunks are the whole event)

Not sure how many kids are coming? Start with last year's sign-in count or school enrollment, then add younger siblings. They always come. They always want the full-size bar.

Step 2: Add a 10–20% Buffer

Siblings, second laps and the one trunk that runs out at 6:15 p.m. A 10–20% buffer covers all of it. Running short is worse than having leftovers for the next staff meeting.

Step 3: Turn Pieces Into Bags

Total pieces = kids × pieces per kid × (1 + buffer). Then bags needed = total pieces ÷ pieces per bag, rounded up. Check the label, since many bags run 100–300 pieces. Divide total pieces by the number of trunks so each car knows its share.

Step 4: Set the Budget and Cost per Kid

Budget = bags × cost per bag. Cost per kid = budget ÷ kids. As a rough example only, some PTAs plan around $4 per kid; your number depends on candy choice and how generous your crowd is.

A Worked Example

  • 350 kids × 15 pieces = 5,250 pieces

  • + 15% buffer = 6,038 pieces

  • 20 trunks = about 302 pieces per trunk

  • 150 pieces per bag = 41 bags

  • $20 per bag = $820 total, about $2.34 per kid

Forty-one bags of candy, and somehow two will still go missing before the event starts.

Don't Forget Non-Food and Allergy-Friendly Treats

Set aside a share of your total for teal pumpkin / non-food treats like stickers, pencils, glow sticks and erasers, plus some allergy-friendly candy. Put them at one or two clearly marked trunks so families can find them fast. The calculator has a line for your non-food share, so it's planned, not an afterthought.
