Private School or Public School: Same Room Parent Job
August 27, 2026 · 1 min read

You help one class. That stays true in a private school and in a public school. The little faces are the same. The clipboard is the same. The extras are what change.
In a public school, the PTO often runs the big school events. You can cheer them on and add one line to the class note. You do not have to run the carnival. Room parent or PTO volunteer
In a private school, there are often more parties, more dress-up days, and a bigger gift ask. You can still keep it kind. One signup list. One way to pay, one date, then stop. If the school handbook says something different, follow the handbook. The kids will still smile.
What stays the same
Ask the teacher first. A school email is enough.
Ask about class allergies before you shop. Do not name a child in the class note.
Send one class note, with the date, what to bring, and where to sign up.
Put cleanup on the list, so you are not the only one holding the broom.
What you can skip in either school
Carpool, bandaging booboos, and the break room. Copies and watching the class, unless you feel like offering. The other parents may have opinions. You still get to enjoy the job you signed up for.
If you just said yes, start here: I just signed up
The short list of the job is here: Room mom duties
Then go to pickup. Thank you, room parent. Public or private, you are up for the Room Parent Hall of Fame. The trophy is imaginary. The kids' smiles are real.
Survived this one? Wear it proudly.
